How to Write a Resume That Passes ATS in 2026

Writing a resume in 2026 means writing for two audiences: the ATS software that filters first, and the human recruiter who reads what survives. Here is how to satisfy both.

Step 1: Start With the Job Description

Before writing a single word, read the job posting carefully. Highlight every skill, tool, and qualification mentioned. These are your target keywords. Your resume needs to reflect this language naturally.

Step 2: Use a Clean Template

Choose a simple, single-column resume template. No tables, no text boxes, no graphics. Use standard fonts like Arial or Calibri at 10-12pt. Keep margins between 0.5 and 1 inch.

Step 3: Write Strong Section Headers

Use exactly these labels: Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. Do not rename them. ATS systems look for these exact terms.

Step 4: Quantify Everything

Numbers stand out to both ATS and humans. Instead of "managed a team," write "managed a team of 8 engineers." Instead of "improved sales," write "increased sales by 35% in Q3 2025."

Step 5: Scan Before You Submit

Before applying to any job, run your resume through an ATS checker. This shows you your keyword match score, formatting issues, and what a recruiter will actually see.
